Utica University is currently in the process of seeking the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accreditation for a respiratory care program. However, Utica University cannot assure that the CoARC will grant accreditation.

Program Goals

Both high school graduates and college transfer students may apply for admission to the Respiratory Care program. The following are required for consideration to become a degree candidate:

  • The ability to demonstrate competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs).

  • The technical proficiency in all skills necessary to care for diverse patient populations and backgrounds in a variety of clinical and community-based settings in an equitable, respectful, and inclusive manner.

  • The capability to gain employment in and successfully transition into entry level respiratory therapist positions within six months of graduation.


  • High School students must have a GPA of 3.0 (80%) or higher. SAT/ACT scores are optional and may be used to holistically review the candidate.

  • Transfer students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and grades of C+ or higher in all math and science courses (Intermediate Algebra, Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry) for transfer toward the A.S. in Respiratory Care.

  • Courses in math and science took more than 6 years before admission are subject to review and may need to be revisited at the discretion of the Program Director.
  • Once admitted to the Respiratory Care Program, students must maintain at least a C+ in all courses and a GPA greater than 2.5 each semester. Respiratory care courses must be taken in the required sequence.

  • Additionally, each applicant will be required to provide documentation of health screening, urine drug screening, and criminal history background check before admission into the Respiratory Care Program clinical courses.  Enrollment into this program will be contingent on the results of the health screening and the background check as this is the minimum requirement for placement both at clinical affiliation sites and in the field.
